My Story

Judd Lawler and family

Henry, Ericka, Judd & Claire

I am a husband and a father of two.  My wife, Dr. Ericka Lawler, is a hand surgeon.  We have lived in the Cosgrove-Windham area for 18 years.

I have deep roots in District 91.  I am a 7th-generation Iowan.  One of my grandfathers was the first settler in his township, and his gravestone is in a cornfield outside of North English.

Two of my brothers were born in Marengo.  I began my education in Victor and Ladora's school district (HLV) and completed high school in Johnson County.  Our home in Hardin Township is the only home my children have ever known.

I come from a long line of hard workers.  They were farmers, teachers, mechanics, and truck drivers.  As a young guy, I followed in their footsteps.  I worked on my grandfather’s farm, flipped burgers, was a camp counselor at East Iowa Bible Camp near Millersburg, and started a house-painting business.

Growing up, I noticed that ordinary people like us often feel powerless.  Things happen to us — a bill collector makes threats, or the government sends a scary letter — and we don't understand what is happening.  When you’re a kid, it hurts to see it happen to people you respect and love. I decided to learn how the law and government and business work so that I would know my rights.  And then I could help other people stand up for themselves.  So I became the first member of my family to go to law school.

I worked hard and was appointed an Assistant U.S. Attorney.  I learned how the government works (and doesn’t), and I helped put some major Wall Street crooks in prison.

Then it was time for Ericka to launch her medical career.  So when our children came along, I stayed home to raise them.  I homeschooled them, split firewood, raised chickens and turkeys, and spent a lot of time repairing a house that’s as old and beat-up as me.

I’ve also served on the boards of some local non-profits.  Most recently, I addressed the Johnson County Board of Supervisors on behalf of my neighbors in Windham.  That was a chance to speak truth to power.

Now my kids are older, and it’s time to get involved in public service again.  My heart is in rural and small-town Iowa, and I hope to represent you in the state legislature.

Please join me in standing up for our communities and our values.
